Well before the rise of local Bordeaux blends, the Marquis Carlo Guerrieri Gonzaga takes the lesson of Bordeaux as one of the first to bring the barriques to the cellar in Italy. As a young winemaker he familiarized himself with Cabernet cuttings in the legendary San Guido estate of Mario Incisa della Rocchetta (Sassicaia), where he apprenticed to return to Avio and upset the production of the family business. With the support of Giacomo Tachis, father of modern Italian oenology, it was easy to understand that this splendid terroir could generate a pearl as precious as San Leonardo, whose first vintage is 1982. The success of this red, which in memory of Guida did not miss a vintage, it was unexpectedly celebrated beyond the Alps, at the Vinexpo fair in Bordeaux, where at the end of the eighties in blind tasting and as a complete stranger, he won against the untouchable Premiers Crus del Médoc. Today it is very popular with wine lovers to keep more than one bottle per vintage, due to its incredible capacity for evolution, worthy of the best wines in the world.
