Roberto Conterno's cellar is like a museum, an oenological sanctuary, guardian of a priceless heritage. More than a century of activity, imposing barrels and verticals of Barolo Francia and Monfortino, which have been resting for decades, are for the visitor a memorable journey backwards, marked by a formidable knowledge of wine and many, scrupulous harvests; a cross-section of Langhe tradition and signature wines that surprise and fascinate with every sip. But Roberto's is a star that shines today like never before, thanks to two recent, important investments. Having landed in Upper Piedmont, with the desire to compete with the particular expressions of Nebbiolo at the foot of Monte Rosa, he purchased 90% of the historic Cantina Nervi in Gattinara; an area on which the markets have recently been paying particular attention. While in 2015 he acquired the Arione di Serralunga d'Alba cru from Gigi Rosso, one of the most prestigious vineyards in Barolo, bordering the France cru to the south and highly anticipated this year's debut. A wine, Arione 2015, which seems to interpose itself between a more "classic" Monfortino than the rest of the range, already extraordinarily expressive when young but with the temper to challenge the decades, and a France of considerable impact but reluctant to show off its potential in the first years of life.
